Australia Subclass 600 Visitor Visa: What Indian Applicants Are Really Asked
Subclass 600 is decided largely on one test: are you a genuine visitor? Here is what that test looks at, stream by stream.
In this article · 4 sections
Australia's visitor visa is Subclass 600. Applications from India are lodged online, and the decision turns heavily on the genuine temporary entrant considerations — your circumstances in India, your incentive to return, and whether your stated purpose holds up.
Choose the right stream first
- Tourist stream — holidays, sightseeing, or visiting family and friends.
- Sponsored Family stream — where an eligible Australian relative sponsors your visit.
- Business Visitor stream — meetings, conferences or negotiations, not paid work.
Applying in the wrong stream is a common and avoidable mistake. The stream determines what evidence carries weight and what conditions may be attached.
The genuine visitor test in practice
The decision maker weighs your personal circumstances in India, your immigration history, and the credibility of the trip you describe. Files that read well usually cover:
- Stable employment or business, with leave approved for the exact dates you requested.
- Family and financial commitments in India.
- Funds that comfortably cover the trip, with a traceable source.
- A travel plan proportionate to your leave and your budget.
- Clean, fully declared travel and visa history.
If a relative in Australia is inviting you
- 1 An invitation letter stating who you are, the relationship, the dates and who pays for what.
- 2 Their status evidence — citizenship, PR or a valid visa.
- 3 Proof of relationship: birth certificates, marriage certificate, family register entries or photographs across years.
- 4 Their accommodation details, and financial documents if they are supporting the trip.
Health, character and biometrics
Depending on your age, intended length of stay and history, you may be asked for a health examination at a panel clinic, or to provide biometrics. These requests come after lodgement, so keep your inbox and ImmiAccount monitored.
Common questions
How long can I stay on a Subclass 600?
The period granted is decided case by case and stated on your visa grant notice — commonly three, six or twelve months per entry. Always read the grant notice conditions.
Can I work on a visitor visa?
No. Subclass 600 does not permit work. Business visitor activities such as meetings are allowed, but not paid employment.
Is a No Further Stay condition possible?
Yes, condition 8503 can be attached. If it is, you cannot apply for most further visas while in Australia.
