US B1/B2 Visa Interview: The Questions You Will Actually Be Asked
Most US visitor visa interviews last two to three minutes. Preparation is not about scripts — it is about being able to answer plainly.

The US visitor visa interview is short. The officer has your DS-160 on screen and is testing whether your answers match it and whether your purpose and ties are credible. Long, rehearsed answers work against you.
Questions that come up again and again
- Why are you going to the United States?
- How long will you stay, and who will you stay with?
- Who is paying for your trip?
- What do you do for work? What is your monthly income?
- Have you travelled abroad before?
- Do you have family in the US? What is their status there?
- Are you married? Do you have children? Who will they stay with?
- Have you ever been refused a US visa?
How to answer
- 1 Answer the question asked, then stop. One or two sentences.
- 2 Keep every answer consistent with your DS-160 — dates, employer, relatives, funding.
- 3 Never guess. If you do not know a figure, say you are not certain rather than inventing one.
- 4 Carry your documents, but do not push them across the counter unless asked.
- 5 If your case has a weak point, know the one honest sentence that explains it.
Before the interview day
- Re-read your own DS-160 from start to finish.
- Confirm your appointment location and reporting time; arrive early.
- Carry your passport, appointment confirmation, DS-160 confirmation page and photograph.
- Keep supporting documents organised in one folder — funds, employment, ties, invitation.
Common questions
Can I use the interview waiver (Dropbox)?
Eligibility depends on your previous US visa and its expiry, among other factors. The current criteria are published by the US Mission in India and change from time to time.
How long does the interview take?
Usually two to five minutes at the consular window, though total time at the consulate is much longer.
Will more documents improve my chances?
Not by volume. A small, well-organised set that supports your stated purpose is far more persuasive than a thick file.
